I have been a stay at home mom but am about to set out on my first career. My husband and I have decided it’s time to pay off all our debt and keep out of debt. My kids are in school – they are 10 and 7. I am interested in “going green” but not in being an activist (probably).
I am a reader (and former English major) so I have amassed quite a collection of books on personal finance, being thrifty, and green living. Having read many of them (with more on the to be read shelves), I have decided a few things: to meal plan and cook dinner at home; to hang our laundry; to use natural cleaners wherever possible; to cancel unneeded subscriptions; to pay off the debts one at a time, smallest first; to adjust the heat by a few degrees; to start a compost pile; and to make and make do where it’s reasonable. Now, this sounds like a lot but it’s doable. Really! I’ve had successes and failures and I’m prepared to share both. There is a method to my madness and, to my surprise, it makes life easier.
I’m not a coupon queen, nor am I an expert. Boy am I a beginner! But hopefully my road is one you can walk along with me. Or at least sit by the roadside and laugh as I limp by.
