1 cup Borax
1 cup washing soda
1/2 cup citric acid
1/2 cup kosher salt
Use one rounded tablespoon per load.
Ok, you already have the washing soda and Borax from the laundry detergent. For the citric acid you can use 4 packets of lemon Kool-aid or 1/2 cup of Lemi Shine which can be found in places like WalMart or Target. Amazon.com sells it as well but it’s more expensive there. You can get food grade citric acid on Amazon for pretty cheap. Going through Amazon is actually more expensive for Borax and washing soda than it is to buy it at the market. I found the combo of both of them together for $16 on Amazon but bought them both for about $8 total at the store. I’m sure I could have found them cheaper but this was during my “I want to play at being Susie Homemaker” phase. As in all things, shop around.
For a rinse agent, fill your rinse agent cup with white vinegar.
*** I haven’t tried this yet. We have a bunch of dish detergent that we’re going to use up before I need to try this. However, this is the most common recipe I see and it’s the one I am going to try. I’ll let you know how it goes.

It works great. Sparkly dishes, unclouded glassware and plasticware. It’s great. I worked it out and it comes to about $0.07 per load. We were paying $0.50 per load with the super duper detergent we were using. Huge savings and a lot less chemicals.
Ideal. Borax is hard to get hold of in The Netherlands. But I’m going to try and get some.
If you go on Amazon.com and search Borax, good old 20 Mule Team Borax comes up. It says it’s over $10 but there are other sellers in there that have it for $6. I’m assuming Amazon is worldwide. I honestly have no idea. Sorry! And I’m not sure how expensive shipping would be. If all else fails, there’s that to try.
I’ll see if it’s on the European sites but often they don’t have a trade agreement to export to other countries. It’s worth a try though. Thanks
